Joshua Owen Mills(English)

Born in Neath, South Wales, Joshua is recognised as one of the country’s most promising young tenors. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, was a Jerwood Young Artist with Glyndebourne Opera, and in 2015 became a member of the Opera Studio at the Bavarian State Opera, Munich.

Joshua has won numerous competitions and awards including the Glyndebourne Donald Anderson Award, the Glass Sellers Prize at the Guildhall Gold Medal Competition, the Dunraven Young Welsh Singer of the Year competition, the London Welsh Trust Young Welsh Singer of the Year competition, the Towyn Roberts Scholarship and Osborne Roberts Memorial Prize at the National Eisteddfod, and second prize in the National Mozart Singing Competition.

On the concert stage, Joshua has appeared at the Wigmore Hall and the North American Festival of Wales in Minneapolis. Most recently, he appeared at the Last Night of the BBC Proms in Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music under the baton of Sakari Oramo. The Magician 

Opera performances in Munich include Don Gaspard La Favorite, Gastone in La Traviata, Henry Bowers South PoleThe Magician The ConsulMayor Albert Herring, Nereo MefistofeleFirst Prisoner Fidelio, Servant of Amelia Un ballo in mascheraand Liverotto Lucrezia Borgia. Further roles include cover Belfiore La finta giardiniera, Animal Seller Der Rosenkavalier and Gastone La Traviata (Glyndebourne). Hotel Porter Death in Venice and Tamino Die Zauberflöte (Garsington Opera), a performance which earned Joshua the Simon Sandbach Award for outstanding professionalism. 

Recent highlights include concerts with the Münchner Symphoniker and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Bayerische Staatsorchester; St John Passion with the Jyväskylä Symphony Orchestra in Finland; Mozart Requiem at the Royal Festival Hall; Messiah with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and Chorus;  and ‘Ten Tenors’ in Llandudno – a concert featuring ten of Wales’ most talented young singers. Next season, Joshua joins the ensemble of the Stadttheater Klagenfurt.

Joshua Owen Mills studierte Gesang an der Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Er gewann diverse Wettbewerbe und Auszeichnungen, darunter die Guildhall Gold Medal Competition und die National Mozart Singing Competition.

Er war Glyndebourne Jerwood Young Artist beim dortigen Festival, wo er u.a. Belfiore (La finta giardiniera) und Gastone (La traviata) sang. 2013 übernahm er die Partien Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) und Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) an der Garsington Opera. Zudem ist er als Konzertsänger tätig und gastierte u.a. beim Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Ab der Spielzeit 2015/16 ist er Mitglied des Opernstudios der Bayerischen Staatsoper. Partien hier 2015/16: u.a. Nerèo (Mefistofele), Henry “Birdie” Bowers (South Pole), Diener Amelias (Un ballo in maschera), Mr. Upfold (Albert Herring).
